So, two days ago was the day when I moved all my stuff out.
I’d been thinking about it for a couple months and I had prepped by getting a lot of the things that were easier to move organized and into file boxes and had a couple of my staff move those boxes out. I put almost everything I own into file boxes for a couple reasons.
- I don’t like big heavy boxes that I am going to have trouble moving.
- They have these nice lids on them and handles which are easy to carry
- They’ve got nice places to write the contents of each box
- Since they are all the same size they are easy to stack up nice and evenly
How do you find a moving company when people don’t move that often, it is hard to get a referral and you probably won’t use the same company you used before because it has been so long?
So, I went on Yelp like I do for many things and I found Route 66 movers.
ROUTE 66 MOVING AND STORAGE

I told them that I needed people who were intelligent, could take direction, and help me organize things because I was going to be packing a lot of boxes while the movers were there. When it came time to do the actual move the two guys showed up. They helped my wife move some of her stuff around the house. Then I unloaded all of my stuff. Two of my staff were down waiting curbside. As the movers would move a box of stuff out they would go through it and add any bubble wrap that was needed to pack it and a write the contents on the side of the box. By the time we were done over 90% of my stuff was in file boxes and that even included most of the clothes and were neatly labeled and organized.
When the movers first looked at what I needed to do they thought it would take 3-4 hours, but because I wanted to be really meticulous in the organization, as I will probably be on the road for the next 6 months, I wanted them to take their time and really organize the stuff well.
So, by the time we loaded everything into the truck and drove everything to the storage place 2 miles away and unloaded it all and organized it really nicely in the storage unit it ended up taking us 6 hours. The whole thing ended up costing just over $600. It was something like an $85 show-up fee and $85 an hour for 6 hours, $25 for each wardrobe box, which were packed like mini closets. I also got a couple regular boxes from them. One to put the picture from when I went to the Playboy mansion of the naked painted girls the other one was for another painting I had. They did an incredibly, incredibly good job. The two guys were extremely educated. The guy who was in charge, that did the main part of the moving, had actually studied computer science. The other mover had been a flight attendant for a while and was incredibly intelligent and also gave me some good fashion advice regarding my ties as he owns over 200 ties so he told me which ties were in style that I should keep and which ones were not a problem to get rid of.
It was fascinating because the day ended with none of us having to wait for any of the others. One of my staff, at the time she had to go, was just about when she wasn’t needed. At the time when one us was finished each of the other was finished as well. There was almost no waiting around by anybody. I realized that in retrospect I should have been doing stair climber training for the last 6 months because even though I was just supervising I was going up and down the stairs so many times that by the end of the day my calves were absolutely spent.
I thought for what they did it was quite affordable if you take into account the amount of money I had to pay my staff. I ended up spending about $700 to move my stuff out and into storage. I am guessing it is going to be roughly the same to move it back although it won’t take as long because I won’t be paying movers to unpack my stuff. I will just be paying them to put it in the house. So, maybe $500 to do it.
When you stop and think about it a house these days is about $700,000 . By the time I am done I will have spent about $1,000 on moving plus a few thousand hours of my time. It seems like a waste to have to spend that much money on moving which is one of the reasons I hate to move and I swore to myself that I would never move again and if I hadn’t of had to get out of the house I wouldn’t have.
All in all I thought that Route 66 Moving did a great job. I am going to give them 5 stars on Yelp. The only thing that was a minor inconvenience was that the boss was calling and trying to get them to hurry up and go to another job after he had told me that they would be with me all day, but that was something that was handled with just a bit of quick communication and all was well.
Would I recommend you use Route 66 Moving? Absolutely, positively, unreservedly. Compared to other people I have known that were movers these guys were intelligent, extremely, extremely polite, and very careful with the walls and protecting the furniture. They were even sensitive to my own personal issues when I had to stop and deal with deciding whether to keep something or throw it out because it had sentimental value. After we were done I even went and got Chinese food with the guys. We had a great time. Route 66 Moving 2 thumbs up. Thank you very much!
