  1. Teens Hospitalized for Consuming Hand Sanitizer

    April 25, 2012 by editor

Ok kids, here’s my second blog post in two days about health, specifically about things you should NOT be doing to stay healthy. It’s prompted by this article I read from the LA Times about the “trend” of teenagers drinking hand sanitizer to get drunk, and getting alcohol poisoning which then lands them in the hospital. Among the many things you should do to stay healthy include getting enough exercise, rest, and proper nutrient intake. A big no-no for staying healthy is consuming toxic substances. This term “toxic substances” is an umbrella under which falls smoking, eating artificial flavors and colors, and, yep you guessed it, drinking alcohol. Especially something that contains 62% ethyl alcohol, good grief! The LA Times recently reported,

“The California Poison Control System has received 60 reports of teenagers drinking hand sanitizer since 2010, showing the dangerous trend is not unique to Los Angeles.

Hand sanitizer, which has 62% ethyl alcohol, produces a potent drink that can cause alcohol poisoning. Some of the cases involve teenagers who used salt to separate out the alcohol.

There were also 147 cases involving children ages 6 to 12 and 2,180 cases ages 0 to 5, believed to have accidentally ingested the gel, according to poison control service, part of the UC San Francisco’s Department of Clinical Pharmacy.

The vast majority of all the cases statewide were minor and treated at home, but about 50 of the youths went to a hospital or were referred to a hospital for treatment.

In Los Angeles County since March, there have been 16 cases of teenagers requiring medical attention, according to the California Poison Control System.”

Ok parents, lets go. Time to sit down and have “the talk” with your kids about drugs and alcohol… and hand sanitizer. Let’s get healthy guys! Let’s keep our families healthy and take good care of our bodies and minds. If that means chucking the hand sanitizer in the garbage and instilling a “soap and water for hand-washing only” policy in the house, by all means. Nothin’ wrong with a good ole bar of soap and some water. :)

  2. “Heart Attack Grill” in Las Vegas Claims 2nd Victim

    April 25, 2012 by editor

Apparently the second person in two months has collapsed during a meal at the Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas. The cause of the collapse is not actually proven to have been a heart attack, but I still don’t think it looks very well for an eating establishment of the same name who already had one heart attack victim last month! Here’s the thing. You don’t just walk into a restaurant, fit as a fiddle, have one burger, and drop. Personal health is a series of choices, and I think it’s worth looking at the lifestyles, weight, eating choices, and exercise level of these folks. Here’s the story, as reported by Andrew Chow of Reuters:

Photo Courtesy of the Heart Attack Grill

“For the second time in two months, a customer at Las Vegas’ Heart Attack Grill collapsed mid-meal and was carted off to a hospital.

The female customer, a Las Vegas resident in her 40s, had been devouring a “double bypass burger,” puffing on cigarettes, and sipping a margarita when she collapsed Saturday night, the Grill’s owner told ABC News.

The woman is recovering from her medical emergency but — like the man who collapsed at the same Grill in February — she likely won’t be able to sue for her medical bills.

First, it’s not yet clear what caused the lady to collapse at the Heart Attack Grill. (That’s different from February’s collapse, which was determined to be an actual heart attack.)

Next, there’s a lack of scientific evidence that eating an artery-clogging hamburger can trigger an imminent heart attack, ABC News reports. But a greasy diet can add to the risk of a heart attack — along with smoking and other lifestyle factors.

Then there’s the legal doctrine of assumption of risk — when someone freely and knowingly accepts the possibility of injury for taking part in an activity.”

To finish reading the article including a quote from the Heart Attack Grill owner, click here.

True, the Heart Attack Grill’s quadruple-pass burger has nearly 10,000 calories and according to the Guiness Book of World Records is the most caloric sandwich in the world. But, also true, the folks dining in that establishment are doing so of their own will, despite a sign in the restaurant warning that the food is bad for your health. To me, it’s kind of like cigarettes. Companies make them, but no one is forcing you to smoke them. I only hope this unfortunate incident raises some awareness on the important of health and making smart eating choices.

  3. Buckyballs Swallowed by Toddler, Parents Be Careful

    March 6, 2012 by editor

This Buckyballs incident has brought to light some parental issues that I’d like to address here. Do accidents happen? Of course. I’m not saying they don’t. But when parents own things that are designed for parents and not for children, the two should stay completely separate. This little 3-year-old girl swallowed 37 magnetic Buckyballs. 37! First off, I’d like to ask how long she was unsupervised to have had time to swallow 37 BB sized magnetic balls? We’re not talking 1 or 2 down the hatch, we’re talking 3 dozen. Secondly, Buckyballs, which is marketed as a stress-relieving desk gadget for adults, clearly states on its warning label that the product is not intended for children, and touts a warning: “Swallowing of magnets may cause serious injury and require immediate medical care.” The age recommendation on the packaging is 13+. MSNBC reports,

“A 3-year-old girl was recovering Monday at Legacy Emanuel Hospital after doctors removed 37 ‘Buckyballs’ magnets from her intestines.

Payton Bushnell complained to her parents of symptoms that resembled the flu, Legacy spokeswoman Maegan Vidaltold KGW. Then, they took her in to get checked.

Doctors took an X-ray and found the balls, clustered in herstomach. She was expected to fully recover and was listed in good condition Monday morning. She has been in the hospital since Feb. 21.

The Oregon toddler was fortunate. In 2006 the government warned about risks from magnets used in toys after at least one child died and almost 19 were injured. As a result, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled almost 4 million Magnetix building sets and magnets were included in holiday warnings about dangerous toys. The risk occurs when a child swallows one or more small magnets, which can link together in the digestive tractand perforate the intestines.”

Hopefully, parents will use this incident as a wake-up call to double check the baby- and toddler-proofing in their homes. You could even combine it with your spring cleaning and kill two birds with one stone! Have some fun with it. Crawl around on the floor at a toddler’s level and pretend to be a little kid again. Look around your house and say, hmm, what do I have here that I would find appealing if I was 3, that could be dangerous if I got into? Then store these things high out of reach, or in a locked cabinet or closet. And for crying out loud, keep the Buckyballs away from the chillins!

  4. But What About the Boobies?

    February 2, 2012 by editor

If there is anyone in support of boobs, it’s me. That’s why I was bummed by the news yesterday that the Susan G. Komen cut funding to Planned Parenthood, money that went directly to breast cancer screening and other breast health sorts of things (I can’t go into too much detail here as I’ve never had a breast cancer screening myself.) We’re not talking peanuts either, guys. PPH said that the Komen grants totaled around $680,000 last year. C’mon, Sue! Don’t hate on the boobies! The New York Times reported the other day,

”In a decision that is inflaming passions on both sides of the abortion debate, the world’s largest breast cancer organization, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is cutting off its financing of breast cancer screening and education programs run by Planned Parenthood affiliates.

The move will halt financing to 19 of Planned Parenthood’s 83 affiliates, which received nearly $700,000 from the Komen foundation last year and have been receiving similar grants since at least 2005.

Planned Parenthood contends that the Komen foundation is yielding to longstanding pressure from anti-abortion groups, which Komen denies.

A spokeswoman for the Komen foundation, Leslie Aun, told The Associated Press that the main factor in the decision was a new rule adopted by Komen that prohibits grants to organizations being investigated by local, state or federal authorities. Ms. Aun told The A.P. that Planned Parenthood was therefore disqualified from financing because of an inquiry being conducted by Representative Cliff Stearns, Republican of Florida, who is looking at how Planned Parenthood spends and reports its money.”

To read the rest of Pam Belluck’s article in the New York Times, go here.

My other beef with this is I suspect the grant-yanking to be a result of Komen buckling under pressure from anti-abortion activists. For some reason, pulling funding to fight breast cancer because you disagree with abortion doesn’t quite make sense… Unless you’re telling me that every single woman who walks into PPH has a breast cancer screening, then an abortion. Lighten up, Suzy K! Where’s the love?

  5. 5 Reasons You Should Stay Mentally & Spiritually Healthy

    January 26, 2012 by editor

Let’s face it, there is some crazy shizzle in this world. Our role models often end up on TV after a car crash, arrested or overdose while on some substance or another.

Demi Moore just got hospitalized, possibly to whip-its (inhaling nitrous oxide).  Pat Sajak was interviewed on Dan Le Batard’s show “Highly Questionable” revealing that he and Vanna White used to do “The Wheel of Fortune” drunk.  Now the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released the results to a study examining Morgellon’s disease and have concluded the disease is a result of delusional infestation.

The mind is a powerful mother, and it and your body are controlled by you!

    1. If you don’t take care of your mind and spirit, then things can get worse.

Many people I know who “Just didn’t care” ended up using alcohol and drugs to get them through some sticky wicket, and then just stayed on them. At this point in my life, I am going through a real loss, the loss of my wife through divorce, but I suck it up and face the pain head on. Crying sometimes? yes. Smiling and laughing things off when ready, absolutely. :)

    2. Drug companies want you on drugs.

Let’s face it, those billions of dollars of ads they are showing you are not just for fun and games. These big drug companies want you on drugs. If you take good care of your mind and body, then when the shizzle hits the fan, you will be doing at least o.k. and no one will be able to use it as an excuse to get you on meds.

    3. Your kids, friends and family need you.

When you are doing well and happy, then you inspire the world. When I am doing my usual self, people just love to be around me. If I am glum or sad, then sure they give me sympathy for a while, but then after a time they either ignore me or circle me like hungry wolves. LOL

    4. It’s bad for your health to be spiritually f-d up.

You (which are a spirit) control your brain, and your brain controls your body.

If you are f-d up, then you will send crappy messages to your brain, your brain to your body, and your body won’t work well.

The whole mind body connection is nothing weird, it is just your brain and nerves.

    5. You get poor if you are mentally f-d up.

Last year I was working with a guy online. Every time I emailed with him, he was facing some new problem or another. In life I am hear to help, and in business I want to help my customers, but if you want to work with me, and handle my money, websites, staff, or my work in any way, you better be happy as a clam, and ready to roll hard.

  6. You Need to Build Your Health Before You Build Your Wealth

    January 25, 2012 by editor

Hey Guys!  Apparently G.I. Jane has met her weakness…EXHAUSTION.  Demi Moore was hospitalized for this on Monday.  How many of you have heard about stars suffering from exhaustion?  TMZ is saying it’s substance abuse, but hey, let’s face it, this all comes down to being healthy.  If you aren’t doing what you are supposed to do, you’re not going to perform well in life.  Here are my 6 tips to becoming healthy, brothas!

    1. Chiropractic: Getting an adjustment from a Chiropractor just might do wonders for your body.  Chiropractic works to gently move the bones to take the pressure off of the nerves and allow the brain to send its messages to all of the parts of the body.  If your brain is talking to your body and your body is talking to your brain then you are on the path to getting better.

    2. Exercise: Move those bones!  Exercise is for more than losing weight.  It improves your mood, helps you sleep better, actually give you more energy, makes you stronger and wait for it…increases your good choleterol and decreases your triglycerides which are a form of fat.  Your good cholesterol is called high-density lipoprotein (HDL).  HDLs protect against heart attack.

    3. Sufficient Nutrient Intake: Put good stuff in your body.  Eat healthily, take your vitamins, drink enough water.  Are you getting all the nutrients your body needs?  Easy way to tell if you are drinking enough water — your pee should be totally clear.

    4. Mental Health: Clear your mind.  Stress can lead to all sorts of things like change in sex drive, fatigue, tense, tight muscles, nail biting, a lowered immune system, etc….

    5. Enough Rest: Get your beauty rest, fellas. Go to sleep early enough so you get at least 8 hours of good sleep.  Lack of sleep can, again, affect your sex drive, alertness, and possibly your ability to lose weight.

    6. No Toxic Intake:  Don’t take drugs or alcohol.  Even stay away from artificial substances like food coloring, sweeteners, and other crazy ass flavorings.  Keep it pure.
