I was just coming off of a wisdom tooth extraction and haven’t been out to a meal in almost a week. The girlfriend and I went for a date and trying to be a little less expensive, we went to a roadside fish stand called Malibu Seafood Company. Boy was I surprised at what we got. I knew the reviews were high on yelp, but I wasn’t in store for what we got. It reminded me of the fish market in Pearl Street, La Jolla. It was absolutely one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to in the world. You walk in the door and on the right side the first thing you see is a really well developed fish counter. Turns out this place is actually owned by fishermen, which is what makes this more focused on the quality of the fish than anything. Their menu is extremely expensive, they had lots of great things like fried clams and some fried fish that I couldn’t order because I wasn’t ready to chew anything that was hard. What I ended up getting was the sea bass. Sea bass was one of the more expensive things on the menu, but I got it because I knew it would melt in my mouth and boy did it melt in my mouth. The quality of the fish, the freshness of the fish was amazing, I ate it without anything else just cooked on the plate an d they might’ve put a little bit of lemon on it. I ate it without all of the side dishes, and it was the fish that was so good that for twenty three dollars for just a slab of fish on my plate , it certainly earned its keep and kept me happy. What was really great about the place besides the ambiance which I’ll go into more, was the quality of everything they sold. When we bought the lemonade the lemonade was organic and all natural, at the end, I got the girlfriend a great dessert prize, which was a ginger molasses cookie with ginger ice-cream as an ice cream sandwich. We both like very interesting food and it was a great surprise that she absolutely loved. She ordered fried clams, French fries and clam chowder, and she loved all of it and thought it was absolutely delicious. Now on to the ambiance. You can tell the place originally started as a road side stand, then they added picnic tables, then they put some umbrella up over them, then they had to do multiple layers of them. By the time we were done we ended up sitting on the third level up which was right across the street from the ocean so we had a panoramic ocean view, we could watch dolphins, waves breaking against the rock, the sun setting just behind the hill right next to the water. And you could look down the coast all the way down to Santa Monica. It was truly beautiful. It was very beautiful for a Malibu setting. Lots of local people coming, one couple even came and brought a big table cloth and some wine and turned it into a semi-formal dining area. It had a really cool, relaxing vibe of people who go there bright and early who love the place. It’s a rare find and it’s something I can’t recommend highly enough.
